The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral will allow you to progress your career in the sport and active leisure industry by specialising in exercise referral.

The demand for exercise referral specialists will continue to grow as diseases such as diabetes and cardiac disease become more prevalent in our society, due to lifestyle factors and an ever increasing ageing population.

Through this qualification you will develop an understanding of anatomy and physiology, medical conditions, professional practice and nutrition. You will develop the skills and knowledge needed to plan and instruct suitable programmes’ for exercise referral patients.

On successful completion of this qualification you will be able to gain employment as an exercise referral instructor and will be eligible for registration onto the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at Level 3.

    Unit 4: Understanding medical conditions for exercise referral (7 CREDITS) (R/503/7492)

    This course is assessed by a variety of methods.

    • Unit 3: Worksheet (2 Credits)
    • Unit 4: Worksheet (7 Credits)
    • Unit 5: Case study and progressive programme, programme cards and worksheet (8 Credits)
    • Unit 6: Summative observed session and session self-evaluation (9 Credits)

    Successful completion of all six units must be achieved for the full qualification.

    Assessment Day

    On the assessment day, you will complete the summative observed session and session self-evaluation of your course with your assessor. We hold assessment days at many locations around the UK. To view the available dates and locations of assessment days, please click here.

    On the day of the practical assessment you will complete the following:

    • Unit 6: Summative observed session and session self-evaluation (Instructing a client through exercises taken from your programme cards in Unit 5)

    At the end of this course, successful learners will receive an VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral. This means that you will achieve a Level 3 qualification on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

    Your qualification is accredited by VTCT, one of the UK’s leading Ofqual approved awarding bodies in the health, fitness and active leisure sector. This qualification will provide CPD points for the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). REPs are an independent public register which provides regulation for instructors and trainers to ensure that they meet National Occupational Standards agreed by the health and fitness industry. This will enable you to obtain public liability insurance to practice as a Gym Instructor.

    You will also be able to gain membership with the Chartered Institute of the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).

    Membership with REPs is valued and respected, enhancing employability, and is recognised in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

    You have up to a year to complete this course, this is usually ample time for learners, even with full time jobs and other commitments. Don’t worry if you go over the year though, we can organise an extension to your course for a small fee, which also extends your tutor support. The approximate guided hours for this course is 242 hours.

    The course is specially designed for study by distance learning. Throughout the course, you will download and complete a questions and answers workbook which you will send to your tutor on completion. You will also attend a practical assessment day.

    You will have access to your personal tutor, via email, who will guide you through the course to help you get ready for your assessments. In addition, you will be supplied with a comprehensive Study Guide which will help you through the study and assessment process. This is especially useful if you haven’t studied for a while.

    Q: WHAT SKILLS ARE NEEDED TO ENROL ONTO THIS COURSE?

    It is recommended that you have some experience of gym-based exercise, including free weights, and basic level communication and personal skills.

    Q: WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE COST OF MY COURSE?

    We provide all the specially written learning materials you require to study this course at home. The course fee also includes tutor support for 12 months and one practical assessment day costs.

    Q: ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL COSTS?

    VTCT charge a registration fee for each qualification you take with them. You will pay this at the time of booking your practical assessment. The registration fee for this qualification is £77.00.

    Q: DO I HAVE TO SIT AN EXAM?

    Yes, there will be two multiple choice exams which you will sit online.

    Q: WHAT IF I LIVE OUTSIDE THE UK?

    That’s fine! This course can be studied anywhere and is completed by submitting assignments. However, you will need to be able to attend one of our practical assessment day in the UK.
