What qualifications do I need to become a Personal Trainer?
To work as a qualified personal trainer within the UK you must hold the following:
- Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing
- Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training
You can study for these seperately with FitLearn, or complete our Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training which combines both of these certificates into one qualification.
Once you have completed these core qualifications there are many specialist qualifications and CPD courses available to allow you to continuously expand your knowledge and client base!
When you are looking to complete any course or qualification, make sure that it is certificated by an awarding body (such as NCFE or VTCT) and endorsed/recognised by REPs/CIMPSA. This ensures it will be recognised within the industry.
Are FitLearn qualifications recognised within the fitness industry?
Yes! Our courses are widely recognised within the industry.
All of our qualifications are accredited by either NCFE or VTCT and recognised by both REPs (Register of Exercise Professionals) and CIMSPA (Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity).
For more details about any of these organisations please visit:
Who are REPs?
Launched in 2002, REPs is an independent, public register which recognises the qualifications and expertise of health-enhancing exercise instructors in the UK. REPs provides a system of regulation for instructors and trainers to ensure that they meet the health and fitness industry’s agreed National Occupational Standards.
REPs provides assurance and confidence to the public and employers that all professionals on the Register are appropriately qualified and have the knowledge, competence and skills to perform their role effectively.
REPs was developed to protect the public from trainers who do not hold appropriate qualifications. As well as protecting the public, REPs was also established to recognise the qualifications and skills of exercise professionals.

Who are CIMSPA?
Launched in 2011, CIMSPA (The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity) is the professional development body for the UK’s sport and physical activity sector. CIMSPA provides leadership, support and empowerment for professionals working in sport and physical activity and a single unified voice for the sector.
CIMSPA has been tasked by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), backed by Sport England and employers, with leading the sport and physical activity sectors workforce development programme. This will be achieved by creating a clear and rigorous set of employer-led standards for all sport and exercise professionals, with a clear and rigorous system for assessment, awarding and validating qualifications.
CIMSPA is recognised as the authoritative, single unified voice for the sector by government departments, key agencies and partners, including Sport England, Public Health England, ukactive, Sport and Recreation Alliance, Sporta and cCLOA. The institute has membership options for everyone working in, or interested in working in, the sport and physical activity world – from student and apprentice through to service director and CEO. CIMSPA already provides a route to chartered status for those working in leisure operations and is developing similar routes for the whole of the sector.

Are FitLearn qualifications internationally recognised?
Our qualifications are recognised in countries that recognise the REPs register, including Australia and New Zealand, South Africa and much of Europe.

What support will I get while I am studying with FitLearn?
Through your learning experience, a dedicated FitLearn tutor will be there to guide and offer support via both telephone and email when you need it. Consider us your training partner – when you push yourself, we’ll be right alongside you.
What can I do after completing a qualification with FitLearn?
By choosing FitLearn as your training provider you are taking your first step onto the ladder towards a successful career in the fitness industry. Once you are qualified, there are many different opportunities available to you, including self-employment or working within a fitness facility.
Different employers will offer different salary packages – some will give you a fixed wage, and others will charge you a fee for use of their facilities (or ask that you work a set number of free hours in the club to cover this cost) but let you take home all the money you earn from working with clients.
Is studying by distance learning right for me?
Studying by distance learning has many advantages, including:
- More affordable than classroom-based learning
- Flexible study to fit around your current commitments
- Flexible assessments
- Study at your own pace
You will need to be able to plan your own time effectively and ideally commit yourself to a set number of hours each week for reading, learning and completing distance based assessments such as written question and answers and online exams.
Only you can decide if distance learning is right for you, but you can be sure that when you study with FitLearn, you receive the highest levels of support from our experienced and dedicated team throughout your studies.
Is there a minimum or maximum age to study?
The minimum age to complete your assessments with FitLearn is 16. You can enrol and begin working towards your qualification when you are 15, but will not be able to perform your practical assessment or submit any theory assessments until you turn 16.
There is no maximum age for studying with us. We have qualified many older students in the past who have gone on to have successful careers, which we believe is helped by the following factors:
- Older adults are the fastest growing population in the UK; there are now more people of state pension age than there are under 16.
- Older adults often have more free time and disposable income than younger people who are more likely to be busy raising families or in full-time employment
- Older adults are quickly becoming one of the most health-conscious age groups and understand how important it is to keep active and mobile
- Older adults will often enjoy the social aspect of attending a gym or fitness class as much as the health benefits
An older personal trainer is much more likely to be appealing to client’s of a similar age, who may be intimidated or unsure of working with a younger trainer. You will also be in a much better position to understand their needs and goals, and to offer invaluable advice.
You are never too old to pursue your passion!
What is the pass rate for FitLearn qualifications?
We have a high success rate with many students passing both their theory exams and practical assessments first time. While you are studying, we encourage you to keep in touch with your tutor and ask as many questions as you need – the support we offer is unlimited!
In the unfortunate event that you refer an assessment, there are no limits on the number of times you can retake it, however students do not usually need to re-take assessments more than once.
What if I change my mind after I have enroled?
We offer a 14-day money back guarantee. If during this time you decide that studying with FitLearn is not the right route for you, simply return your resources in an unused condition. Our full refund policy is available to view before you complete your enrolment online.
How long will it take me to complete my qualification?
The time it takes to complete each qualification varies from student to student, depending on the qualification you are studying and your personal circumstances.
For our distance-learning qualifications, the following timescales can be used to estimate how much time you will need to spend studying and completing theory assessments before attending your practical assessment. These timescales are based on 2 hours study per day:
- Certificate – 4 weeks
- Diploma – 6 weeks
However, it is important to remember these are just approximate guides and will timescales will vary depending on the amount of time you are able to commit to your studies.
What experience do I need to study with FitLearn?
Depending on the level of the qualification you are studying, there may be lower level qualifications that must be completed first. For example, it is a prerequisite of the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training is that you already hold a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing.
You do not need any experience of instructing exercise or fitness to complete any of our qualifications.
We would expect that anyone who is looking to complete a qualification with FitLearn has a keen interest in health and fitness. Attending a gym regularly and having an understanding of different exercises and how gym equipment works are definitely beneficial, but all of the knowledge you need to qualify is included in your learning material.
